The Recreation Committee meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m.
Minutes: The minutes from May 13, 2008 were accepted as written.
Directors Report
Summer:
The average daily attendance for 2008 was 747, up from last year’s 710. The overall attendance for 2008 was 49,269 down from 50,412 for summer 2007. Program participants for 2008 was1557, down from last years 1617. A breakdown of the general pool information was attached to the Director’s Report. The Holden Harpoons had a very successful season with a 6-1-1 record. They took 2nd place in the Championship meet in Westboro. Dawson Recreation Area sandbox has been emptied of sand and replaced with bark mulch because of the nesting bees. Basketball and tennis courts at Mountview have been reconstructed and were ready in early July. The project cost $72,338.
Programs:
Before and After School Programs have 226 children who are currently enrolled; Davis Hill -AM: 45, PM: 49; Dawson School -AM: 30, PM: 37;
Mayo –AM 29, PM: 37. The license capacity is 52 children per program for each site.
Adult programs Yoga on Tues. has 12, and Thurs. has 7 enrolled; Men’s basketball starts Thurs. evenings at Mayo gym from 8-10pm; Women’s Volleyball was scheduled to start this Thurs. because of the school schedule we were bumped out of the gym. For the month of September Women’s Volleyball will be held on Wednesday evenings from 7:15 to 9:00. Latin dancercise begins next Tues evening with 7, and will be re-advertised. Kickboxing begins Tues evening with 8 enrolled. 3CP/Yo starts Tues. with 8 and Thurs with 19 enrolled at Mayo School. Pilates has been cancelled because of lack of enrollment. No one enrolled in beginner Piano; Piano 2 has 1 person enrolled. Both classes will be re-advertised.
Miscellaneous:
The Recreation Supervisor position has been eliminated. The Recreation Leader position has become a full time position. Wendy Nickel has assumed the role. She will assist staff in the After School Program and be responsible for overseeing and developing new adult evening programs.
Skateboard Park: A request by the Town Manager was brought to the attention of the Recreation Committee to discuss and research the possibility of a skate park. Denise gave the Recreation Committee information on the Northborough Skate Park. Parents and children raised money to help with upkeep of their facility. Sue Serewitz will follow up with the Northborough Recreation Committee. Lisa Post is on the fence about building a facility. The committee tabled the discussion until the next meeting.
The next Recreation Committee meeting will be held on October 14th @ 7:00 p.m. at the Starbard Building.
